Looking for a "disaster" novel I read back in the 70s. Basic plot was ayoung woman on vacation in California(?) encounters a dead squirrel (dead from "sylvan plague" ie the name they give the endemic plague inrodents out west to lower the panic levels).
She gets bitten bysome fleas, doesn't notice. She takes the train back to NYC. By the time she gets there, she's at the infectious stage of pneumoinc plague.
She coughs her way thru Grand Central, and goes home and dies in her apartment. By the time she is found, the secondary carriers have infected large numbers...
