Aug. 18th, 2002 03:35 amI went over to Kathy's today, to hang out a bit and borrow her laptop to test the wireless access card.
I managed to leave the software at home so the first thing was getting it off the Internet. Since she has DSL, that's not terribly difficult.
Except that her connection was acting up (more on that later).
I got the software, then we had to get her laptop talking to the desktop machine. That proved a bit more difficult.
I went thru all sorts of config changes before it dawned on me that I'd connected the ethernet cable direct. Without a hub.
Once I hooked in the hub, things worked better. But I discovered that her firewall program (ZoneAlarm) was blocking stuff it wasn't supposed to. Such as my attempts to connect the machines.
We got the wireless card into the system and working, and then I tried getting Internet connection sharing working. That required disabling her firewall, and digging thru the setup showed that she needed the Pro version. She'd been thinking about buying it anyway, so she went to the website and bought a copy.
We then spent several hours trying to get it to install. It keep trying to run a program that wasn't there. I spent a couple of hours going thru the web site and removing files and registry entries by hand to make sure the system didn't have remnants of the old version around. Still no luck.
So we went out to dinner, had a nice time and when we got back, she sent a message to tech support (which will be answered in 1-2 "working days"). So I downloaded Tiny Personal Firewall to keep her protected until they get the ZoneAlarm install problem solved.
She tried cruising the web from the laptop and getting it set up so she could do stuff from it instead of from the desktop.
She kept at that for some time, while I read some stuff and played games on her desktop system. I finally got dropped off home a bit ago.
Time for bed. I'll mess with checking the range of the wireless access point tomorrow.
