A "minor" change in the world
Dec. 2nd, 2022 01:22 pmA spell or act of the gods or some such results in all humans being notified that in a week, men will become able to carry babies. Any non consensual sex will result in the aggressor carrying the baby unless the victim wants to keep it. This includes tricking someone to get him to be a father. With regards to consensual sex, it's a 50-50 chance. Though the couple can choose which one of them gets pregnant by mutual consent.
Also, men start having periods.
Oh yeah, in case the pregnant person wants an abortion, the other parent gets the choice to have the baby transfer to them.
Hmm. Might be a thought to enable folks to volunteer to accept a baby that would otherwise be aborted. Except they don't get to pick which baby they get.
And make protesting to stop abortions count as volunteering.
On second thought, you can volunteer to accept the baby of someone you know (if they are willing)
Otherwise it's random chance. And anti-abortion folks get random chance unless they know a person who is willing to accept them as the new "birther" (mother doesn't seem an appropriate term)
So, any thoughts?

I know "get pregnant to force marriage" happens, though less often now that some of the stigma has gone out of pregnancy out of wedlock, but I don't think it's nearly as common as the sperm donors unwilling to deal with the consequences of the playtime claim. Probably more common is that women on birth control pills aren't warned that some antibiotics can make the birth control ineffective. That, I've seen plenty of times.
I do not like giving a baby to a sexual aggressor, not because it's unjust, but because it's a recipe for child abuse. If the victim doesn't want the baby, fine, if the pregnancy can be transferred to a willing surrogate then do so, but don't give it to someone who is already violent. OTOH, making it possible for men to carry pregnancies (and menstruate, and all the associated stuff that goes with that) would certainly change societal attitudes toward pregnant people and their needs in a hurry. Every time I see someone argue that pregnancy is a normal condition and requires no workplace or life concessions, I want to jump through my screen and shake them. Yes, pioneer women gave birth and went right back to taking care of their farms. They also died of childbirth complications at a horrifying rate.
Where I think it would have the greatest effect is on medical research. The mythical "average person" paradigm is still a heterosexual white male. If men can suddenly become pregnant, then pregnancy will be studied. If men can suddenly menstruate, then menstrual disorders will be studied. And so on and so forth.
I like the justice of giving an anti-abortion protestor the pregnancy of someone who doesn't want to be pregnant. Think twice before you pick up that protest sign, because you might have to put your money where your mouth is.

As for anti-abortion folks..
Not just the protestors. I'm sure the same thing would happen to people who play the "We must think of the babies" card but aren't willing to volunteer.
I can just picture a few instances of politicians (especially male ones) being just a "bit" off in their phrasing during a speech and suddenly becoming 6 months pregnant.
A couple of side points that came up while discussing this with a friend.
At first, there'd be some really uncomfortable discussion, and then uncomfortable classes to get boys educated about periods, birth control and pregnancy.
And...
"Sorry guys, the team isn't going to state this year"
"What happened, coach?"
coach jerks his thumb at some very embarrassed guys. "Because our star players had to go and get themselves knocked up!"
