Whoo boy...

Fayt and I are watching Babylon 5. Specifically the Season 2 episode "A Distant Star".

It just hit me what a *terrible* name for a deep exploration ship "Cortez" is.

It's a GREAT name!

1) Pehaps it's a shining example of honesty in Earthforce. True, the natives they discover won't get the reference until AFTER we've killed most of them and taken their stuff, but still it shows an admirable level of self-awareness and self-acceptance.
2) A more mundane explanation is tha it's named after a famous person in their more recent past. After all, the President was named Santiago.
3) This ambiguity makes for lots of entertainment.

The US Navy has a ship named "The Sullivans" (DDG-68). This is in memory of five brothers who died when the USS Juneau was sunk by a Japanese sub. Think about that one for a minute.
