political/procedural question

Thinking about the *disaster* that is McCain's choice for VP, I was struck by an odd thought.

Anybody know if it's possible for the Republican convention to do something that amounts to "Yeah, we'll take you as our candidate for President, but not her as VP"?

Yes, I know it'd be political suicide. But it might be less hazardous to the country than keeping her.

Sure. A delegation places another name into nomination (it'd have to be an early one... like Alaska) and then calls for a floor debate.

Well, we saw some of that in Denver. After the agreement to put Clinton's name in for nomination, there was a lot of back-room shuffling, which led to the odd passing of several states to get New York up. Then, in a brilliantly planned move, Clinton led the delegation down to the microphone to call for a suspension of the convention rules.
