Oh joy.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of doing my civic duty.
Specifically, I had my alarm set for 4am so I could get to the courthouse by 7 so I could do jury duty.
Wound up actually waking at 3 am. and it wasn't worth going back to sleep. The 4am was probably overly pessimistic, but at least I got a few things done before catching the bus.
Wound up getting to the stop just in time to catch the bus before the one I needed. So when I got to the courthouse, they weren't letting non-employees in yet. at least I was able to wait in the area between the two sets of doors. Much warmer than outside.
The security check was annoying, as always. Since I wear suspenders, I had extra fun. They wanted me to take off the suspenders or take off my shoes and get wanded. I chose the latter, because to get the suspenders fastened in back, I can't be wearing the pants...
After getting thru the check it was off to the jury room. Which didn't open for another 30 minutes.
BTW, even though the summons said to arrive at 7 and the "you really have to be here" time was 8am, there were still a few folks who were late.
At least they've improved checkin over the years. I remember when you had to wait for a clerk to find your name on the list and then do other things by hand. Now, if you remembered to bring the summons (like you are supposed to) and mail in the questionaire in time, all they do is scan the barcode on the top of the summons , scan the Jurir badge, and hand it to you.
There was the usual talk from a judge, followed by a video. And lots of waiting. They called a dozen or so folks up to a courtroom after an hour or two.
Just before the lunch break, they sent all but 40 of those remaining home. Alas, I was one of the 40. Around two, the rest of us got sent home.
I had my Nokia which I was reading "The Godstalker Chronicles" by P. C. Hodgell on. Also, the memory upgrade for my cell phone had arrived Monday, so I'd been able to load most of my music library onto it. I was listening to that all day. Love to know how it figured what order to play things in.
I'd also brought my Dana in case I felt like writing, but no luck.
Between the Dana, the Nokia, my GPS and various cables and power adapters, they really took an interest in my bag when I came back after lunch. One of the deputies asked if I always carried that much electronics around. I told him I was carrying extra to keep occupied during the wait.
Though truthfully, except for the power adapters and a couple of extra cables, what I had *isn't* that uncommon for me.
Mind you I almost napped a couple of times during the wait. Even an interesting book has trouble keeping you awake if you are tired enough.
Anyway, after we got dismissed, I caught the #15 bus back home. Partly because the stop was at the end of the block, and partly because there was a cache I wanted to find about 50 feet from the stop I'd be transferring to the 71 at.
This time I actually found the silly thing. Previous attempts had been foiled by the 71 showing up almost as soon as I got to the stop.
(and yes, Fay, I'll give you the cheat sheet for the cache)
Got home and took care of a few things them did a power nap.
Oy, for once I'm glad I didn't get picked for an actual jury.
