When I bought my house I figured if it got too hot I could arrange a fan to blow cool air from the full basement upstairs. Or even stay downstairs if the heat was too bad.
Uh-Uh.
Didn't take me long for me to get a small window unit for the bedroom (heat during the day being less important then, since work was air conditioned). Then another for my living room. Then my Dad gave me a big 220 Volt window unit which went in my dining room, not coincidentally the hottest room in the house.
When I had to replace my furnace a few years ago I got a heat pump, which heats and cools the whole house. Usually.
The tree I planted in the front yard shortly after moving in is much taller, now, and shades the front in the morning. However, during Summer the afternoon Sun still shines directly in the dining room windows.
